Conservation properties in New Mexico

Heritage Ranch is a vast expanse of land in central and southern New Mexico, replete with the riches of the Chihuahuan desert—abundant wildlife, diverse vegetation communities, and landforms that range from mountains to valley lowlands.

The land, plant, and animal resources are a beckon to researchers and educators, stimulating discussion and inviting a process of discovery.

Our primary goal is to provide a research-based model of good stewardship of land and wildlife resources, and to determine to what extent human habitation is compatible with conservation of natural resources.

To develop a best practice model involves awareness of prior research, applying relevant existing models, determining the impact of humans on the landscape, synthesizing our findings, and using these results to further refine the model.

As an educational resource, we will make research results available in mediums that are useful and accessible, and provide opportunities for hands-on participation by students and others in the community.
